Uniting for Change: Stichting Symbiose's Mission to Transform the Lives of Street Animals

Founding Symbiose

Before Baladi Mabsut

This is the story that preceded Baladi Mabsut (happy stray dogs).

The dogs of Baladi Mabsut were not always happy. It’s already been a year since the dogs were rescued from the hands of the former manager of the shelter VOV Survivors. (Photos of the horrors we found are on our Facebook and Before Album). For two months, starting from October 2022, a number of people tried to negotiate with the former manager to be able to cooperate. Meanwhile, multiple attempts were made to feed the dogs, but this was not always allowed. Hence, the dogs were in extreme condition. There are photos of the horrors the dogs had to endure, like eating tree leaves, straw, or even stones. Both physically and mentally, they were in poor condition. Lyonne Snel, one of the team members now, received a message from one of the people from that rescue group. She responded and sent her son, who was in Egypt at the time, to pay an unannounced visit to that shelter, which her sons had often visited before. His visit was the catalyst for her to join the rescue team. The photos he sent were the final piece of evidence needed to take more radical action, namely the eviction of the owner of that shelter. On January 15, the new lease could finally be signed with the names of the new owners: Petra van Son and Ahmed Hussain Zahran.

From that moment on, the entire team poured their hearts and souls into rescuing those 125 dogs. They had a rough start. Sand had to be renewed and fresh straw had to be placed. Bags of food had to be bought plus the fact that all dogs were covered with ticks. The team faced major challenges, one of which was raising funds to make this rescue a success. To this day, this remains a challenge every month.

The Baladi Mabsut Trust Initiative

Building Trust and Hope for Stray dogs in Saqqara Egypt

Trust was a significant issue. We were all disillusioned with people or organizations that collected funds at the expense of the animals. Our accounting is transparent. We are part of a foundation that is accountable to the government for adherence to rules, regulations, and taxes. The manager, Petra Van Son, and one of the volunteers, Lyonne Snel, had jobs that required integrity checks every five years. Petra was a former embassy employee, and Lyonne worked as a Senior Purser for KLM, the Dutch Airline, for 38 years. They hope their professions demonstrate their integrity. The team has a singular goal: to ensure Baladi Mabsut continues for years and that these dogs never suffer again. Stray Forward was initiated because we cannot save 125 dogs and simultaneously overlook the suffering of dogs and cats on the streets. That’s why Stray Forward was established under the auspices of Baladi Mabsut.

Always care

Paws for Hope: A Sanctuary's Mission to Transform Lives

Baladi Mabsut is dedicated to rescuing and providing lifelong sanctuary to dogs saved from dire situations in Saqqara Egypt. Our sanctuary is a haven of safety and love, where each dog is cared for until their last days. Through our Stray Forward project, we address the plight of street dogs by providing food, vaccinations, sterilizations, medical care, and shelter. Once our sanctuary is sustainably funded, we aim to establish a clinic for medical care and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) initiatives for street animals. Our mission is to alleviate animal suffering, reduce the stray population, and create a compassionate community for all living beings.

HOW WE HELP

A New Dawn for Rescued Dogs: Envisioning a Future of Compassionate Care

At Baladi Mabsut, our vision is to redefine animal sheltering in Egypt by creating a sanctuary that sets a new standard for dog welfare. We have meticulously designed our sanctuary with spacious 7x5m areas, each with a covered pergola leading to an open play area, ensuring our dogs don’t endure the overcrowded conditions seen in many shelters. Our commitment is to not only rescue but also provide a quality life for these dogs, with adoption and natural attrition being the only reasons for new intakes. We focus on addressing and easing suffering without transferring it to a ‘shelter’ environment. By prioritizing the well-being, safety, and happiness of each dog, we strive to be a beacon of hope and a model for compassionate animal care.

Compassion in Action

Values That Guide Our Paws: The Heart of Baladi Mabsut

At Baladi Mabsut, integrity is paramount, with complete transparency in our operations and a firm stand against profiting from animal suffering. Safety and welfare are at the core of our decision-making, ensuring a secure and nurturing environment for every dog in our care. Continuity in our operations provides a stable and predictable sanctuary, essential for the well-being of our rescued animals. Above all, our guiding principle is to offer unwavering security and love to the dogs, creating a haven where they can thrive after overcoming adversity.

Who We Are: The Team Behind Baladi Mabsut

Baladi Mabsut stands as a sanctuary of hope and care for dogs in need in Saqqara Egypt, driven by a dedicated team led by manager Petra van Son, a former embassy employee in Egypt. Assisting her is Ahmed Hussain Zahran, together forming the core of our on-site operations. Our efforts are bolstered by the invaluable support of two women from the Netherlands: Lyonne Snel, a retired KLM Senior Purser, and Asta Booij, who has long been active in combating animal suffering in various countries. These committed individuals handle all sponsorships and donations received through our PayPal account and the account of Stichting Symbiose, as well as organizing the transportation of goods collected in the Netherlands by plane using Egyptair as their primary transportation and is always willing to assist in every way possible. Additionally, Petra is advised and supported by Tracey Sedky, a British woman who has earned her stripes with her own organization, EUFAR. Together, this team embodies the spirit of Baladi Mabsut, dedicating their lives to improving the welfare of dogs and transforming our community’s approach to animal care.

P.S. Baladi Mabsut counts itself lucky to have very dedicated people as sponsors and donators. We have put them all in the spotlight. For us they are so indispensable that we feel that they are just as much a team member as the rest of us because of their endless support.
